Pak Army chief Asim Munir's career has taken another significant step forward with his appointment to a powerful new position. In a recent development, the Pakistan government has promoted Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, a move that carries lifelong privileges and marks him as the second officer in the country's history to hold this title. This promotion comes months after a constitutional amendment was passed, paving the way for Asim Munir to take on the newly created role of Chief of Defence Forces. This role is designed to enhance coordination and unified command among the three services, a crucial step in light of recent military conflicts and the evolving nature of modern warfare.
The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill introduces changes to Article 243 of the Constitution, which governs matters related to the armed forces. According to the bill, the President will appoint both the Army chief and the Chief of Defence Forces on the advice of the Prime Minister. Furthermore, the Chief of Army Staff, who will also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces, will appoint the head of the National Strategic Command in consultation with the Prime Minister. This head will be from the Pakistan Army, as specified in the bill.
The structural overhaul was influenced by the lessons learned from the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan in May, which highlighted the need for integrated operational responses. In response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The strikes triggered intense clashes, with India maintaining that Pakistan pleaded for an end to hostilities after its military infrastructure was targeted. This regional tension and the resulting military actions have likely influenced the decision to create a unified command structure under Asim Munir's leadership.
The bill also states that the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will expire on November 27, 2025, effectively consolidating top military authority under Munir's command structure. This move is seen as an attempt by Islamabad to project stronger military leadership amid regional tensions, with Asim Munir's elevation to Field Marshal and the creation of the new Chief of Defence Forces post playing a pivotal role in this strategy.
